It is important for children to learn the difference between right and wrong at an early age. Punishment is necessary to help them learn the distinction. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Whether punishment is essential to teach children between rights and wrong has become a hot topic of discussion causing public concern. Some people think it is necessary but I disagree with them for the following reasons.

First of all, I believe that the physical punishment can result in injuries in children even presenting danger to their lives. Sometimes, such punishments can take the life of the child. Each year, we come across many new reports which detail the trauma and sufferings of children who were seriously and severely harmed due to the excessive punishment meted out to them. No one could deny that rough act like this would simply make it more difficult for children to tell the difference between right and wrong especially for those in early ages.

Another negative aspect of punishment is that this will become a hindrance to the mental health of the young children. It may even have an adverse impact on the development of children in the long term. Since everyone has intuition and inclination to avoid potential threats from outside environment, there is a possibility that young children may isolate themselves from their parents to lessen harms. Such psychological response has a tendency to create an obstacle to the cordial relationships. It should be also noted that Children are likely to imitate their parents instinctively including these violent behaviors. Such imitations have risks of creating bullies. It can even lead people to violent crimes.

Therefore, in my conclusion, I would like to restate that the imposition of punishment on children is not the ideal way to help them distinguish right and wrong. We ought to opt for some less violent but more effective method to contribute to positive environment for child’s development.
