Message to IELTS Students from Kazakhstan

Welcome back everyone in my blog. In fact, Welcome back to myself. This has been after 3.5 (three and half) years I decided to be back in this blog. I hope my information and materials in this blog will be helpful for visitors in Kazakhstan and others who are looking for many different materials on the web. A bit about myself:

I left Kazakhstan in March, 2019 and these days, I am in Nepal. I am bit distanced from teaching at the moment. But, if it may be that I will be back in Astana (Nur-sultan) around 2022 or 2023 AD. I was there in Nursultan, Kazakhstan in August-September, 2021 and things looked preety cool even post COVID-19 Pandemic. I am hoping to be regular in this forum to update this blog and provide, more and more information to all the readers.

I had not updated this blog for a very long time but I think I need to be active again. This blog which has a lot of contents on IELTS Test is to help students and immigrants to enhance their English skills, to help make their skills better in English Language.

I am restarting this blog on a very auspicious day of Laxmi Puja, Tihar of 2078 BS. I hope Mother Laxmi will be blessing me to continue to write blog posts in addition to making me richer. :) It is also a time when we have almost surpassed the threats created by COVID-19 pandemic. With vaccines being rolled out in many people around the world, the world is opening, is trying to be normal, is trying to get back to business as usual. The borders are opening, and many countries have started, albeit slowly, to open their arms to welcome international students.

For any foreign (international) students, the popular destinations are Australia, Canada, America, and many European countries. I think people would answer me that they are keen to fly to the Australia or America if asked about their higher education. And, to be in all your dream destinations, IELTS Score is one of such important criteria.

I saw a recent Post from a popular educational consultancy, and they had informed that classes with in-person attendance is going to start soon. This advertisement was mainly directed to prospective IELTS Students.

My message to all prospective IELTS Candidates is that you need to have good skills in English to have a great score in IELTS Test. Of Course, you can attend courses run by various institutes. However, there are plenty of free resources and materials on the web. Our blog is one of them.

Tips for the Writing test - Task 2 - General & Academic Writing Task - 2-IELTS Writing

In Task 2 you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. You can use a fairly personal (informal) style. The question may ask you to say why you agree or disagree with the statement in the question or ask you to outline the advantages or disadvantages to a general statement.

It’s best to approach this task with a method to ensure you answer the question correctly, structure it appropriately and have enough time to write well.

Here are some tips to approach the task:

Planning and Organising

Read the question carefully and underline the key words

Decide what structure to use. Most Task 2 questions will ask you to discuss or analyse an issue in terms of advantages/disadvantages and/or take a position by agreeing or disagreeing. This means you can almost always use a four paragraph structure, for example:

Advantages/disadvantages question 

- Introduction: paraphrase the question and give a general answer
that will summarise your opinion
- Main paragraph 1: what are the advantages
- Main paragraph 2: what are the disadvantages
- Conclusion: paraphrase your argument and highlight or restate your personal opinion or position on the issue.

Agree / disagree question

- Introduction: paraphrase the question and give a general answer
that will summarise your opinion
- Main paragraph 1: I agree/disagree because … + supporting reasons
- Main paragraph 2: Another reason I agree / disagree is …
- Conclusion: paraphrase your argument and sum up.

Make sure you note down examples and supporting details for each paragraph. Your arguments should also clearly link back to the position you stated in the introduction.

Spend some time thinking of good vocabulary related to your topic. Note it down.
Writing

Start each paragraph with a topic sentence i.e. the general topic of the paragraph.

Develop your ideas in each paragraph by giving reasons for your answer and include examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Keep your examples fairly short. Don’t go into too much detail; make sure you stay on topic.

Try using linking words like ‘firstly, secondly, finally’ to connect your ideas within each of your main paragraphs. This will help your writing to flow.

Tips for the Writing test - Task 1 in General Writing

• ·         In Part 1 of the General Training Writing test you are presented with a situation and you have to write a letter asking for information or explaining the situation.
•  ·         Make sure you answer the question completely.
• ·         In the question there will be keywords like ‘explain’, ‘suggest’, ‘say’ ‘describe’. Make sure you do everything the question asks you to do.
• ·         Look at the keywords in this question.
• ·         In Task 1 you will be asked to write a letter. Depending on who you are writing to, you need to decide whether to write in a more formal or a more informal style.
• ·         Most everyday written communication in English uses a semi-formal style, where the tone is quite friendly, but some more formal expressions are used. However, we use a more formal style when we’re writing for professional reasons or to people we don’t know. We use an informal style with people we know well, for example, family members, relatives, friends or colleagues.
• ·         There are a number of differences between formal and informal English. For example, sentences are generally longer and more complex in formal writing. Language is often more impersonal, sometimes using passive voice. Vocabulary is often different too, with more words of Latin or French origin and fewer phrasal verbs. We don’t use contractions in formal writing, whereas in informal writing, we use them all the time.

I fully appreciate the challenges of working in a corporate world. Unfortunately, hard work and discipline do not always help to get a promotion. Instead, one should be really smart in building and expanding internal and external networks.

Few years ago, I had the same issue with self-promotion and visibility. In other words, irrespective of the hard labour and efforts to meet work deadline, my contributions remained unnoticed. On the contrary, colleagues and employees who were more vocal, visible and well-connected scored excellent performance ratings and received the laurels. Clearly, I had to change my behaviour and working style in order to promote my contributions in the firm. I had a few coaching sessions with senior leadership team member who shared some tips to succeed in workplace. A couple of months later, my natural modesty were replaced by assertive and confident behaviour.

So, let me give you some advice.

First of all, you should not shy away from sending an email to your supervisor and leadership team stating your achievements in a particular task or project. Secondly, it is likely that people notice you easily when you start writing articles in internal and external journals. Finally, I would suggest you not to miss any opportunity to make presentations at town-hall and meetings.

You are planning to take leave from office because of study reasons. Write a leave application to your manager asking to grant one month leave. In your letter, tell the reason of leave, who will replace you and how you are planning to keep up to date while away.

Dear J,

I am writing to request one month leave, which is required for me to better prepare for my IELTS exam. The exam is scheduled for March 2017 and I am conscious that I am not yet at the level I aspire to. I find it challenging to balance between the work and study. To keep abreast of the developments at work, I will check my office emails on a weekly basis. In addition, I would be available for our bi-weekly team meetings.

I have encountered a website called "Write & Improve - a language improvement tool" developed by Cambridge University Press. I was directed to the website when I was looking for some information on resources for learning English few days ago. I found it to be quite useful even though I that that there are areas for improvement on this website. I would like to review the main features and attributes of this website in my article. Additionally, I would also provide some feedback and recommendations for future improvement.

To begin with, it is easy to navigate within the site. I could locate the resources easily. Since the website is designed by reputed University center, the materials provided were of exceptionally high quality. Without much hassle, I was able to submit my article. As per the instructions, I was told that “submit button” needs to be clicked after writing the article and I meticulously followed the instructions. On submission of my article, I was promptly taken to the next page where I could see the result and feedback on my essay. Overall, I had the pleasant experience. The website did the checking of language, grammar and spelling swiftly.

Despite being easy to make use of the resources in the website, it also suffers from some avoidable drawbacks. First of all, the feedback were system generated, without intervention of human beings, which sometimes, make them unreliable and unbelievable. Unless the student has high speed internet, it slows down the generation of reviews. The designers need to look at it at the earliest.

Suggestion for improvements: Need to use more complex words and wide range of grammar should be used for better score.

What have you identified as the most important language points you need to work on to help improve your IELTS score?

I think it is difficult to pinpoint to only one language skill to get good scores in IELTS. Vocabulary is very important in reading, writing and speaking. If you know a lot of multi-syllable words, good collocations and compound words, you can read the text easily, quickly and can understand it without much efforts. It will enhance your confidence and helps to save a lot of time.

In writing and speaking, vocabulary plays a good role but I think examiners are not only looking for your word lists. You need to be able to exhibit multiple skills when it comes to writing and speaking exams. In writing, a good grammar is very important and use of complex grammar without mistakes is highly desirable. Similarly, coherence in expression of ideas, use of suitable collocation is extremely important.

When it comes to speaking, you need to speak like a native speaker. That means we need to use correct grammar, varieties of colloquial expressions, diverse words but not necessarily complex ones.

Now, in listening, ability to understand different accents and dialects of English is important and it comes only through practice. So, the students start from reading different texts on variety of topics. 

Writing and Reading in IELTS-Is 60 minutes enough?

Please look below my advice on how you can manage your time in IELTS examination.

Some people struggle to finish the reading and writing tests in the time limit. How does the time limit affect the way that you read and write? What can you do to improve this?



First of all, if you want to get a good score in IELTS reading, you should have a good reading skills. That means you have to be able to read any text on any topics quickly, you have to have the ability to understand any sentence with ease. Having a good knowledge of vocabulary is definitely an asset.

In reading, different tricks, tactics and strategies work for different people. IELTS teachers have their own views on how to master the reading part of the IELTS. Some will say that you have to read the question first, some will say that you have to read the topic sentence or find the keyword. For me, these tricks do not work. I need to read the text completely and try to understand everything quickly. If I have a difficulty over a word or phrase (s), I will highlight that part and come back to it again later. As I consider myself good reader with decent knowledge of vocabulary, I am not afraid of reading text.

I advise students to read modern literature from day to day print. Reading The Economist, The Guardian and The New York Times help you a lot. The start will not be easy but you need to make an attempt everyday, learn new words, new complex sentence structures and you will find the rhythm.
In writing, 60 minutes is a lot of time. I had sufficient time to do both the Academic writing tasks. I had the difficulty to keep the essays within the word limit.

I always tend to write a lot and I think I got penalised there. Of course, my score was low not because IELTS examiners penalise you because of long essay but long essays tend to have more mistakes, obscure ideas, conflicting or repetitive views. If you have practiced writing few times at home before exam, you should not be scared of time issue. It is better to focus on meaningful ideas and their presentation. I hope my comments help you.

Hello Everyone, I was quite busy in the last few days and could not update my blog but I am back again. Life has been on a roller coaster ride and it has been quite tough but I hope to update my blog continuously in the future.

Существует два вида экзаменов IELTS:

Academic module – рассчитан на поступление в учебное заведение;

General module – рассчитан на уезжающих за рубеж на работу или постоянное место жительства.

 Статистика показывает, что большинство людей, которые сдали General module отправляются потом в Канаду, Новую Зеландию, Австралию.

А те, кто получил сертификат IELTS Academic module, выбирают пунктом назначения страны Европы.

Hello Everyone, I was quite busy in the last few days and could not update my blog but I am back again. Life has been on a roller coaster ride and it has been quite tough but I hope to update my blog continuously in the future.
