Message to IELTS Students from Kazakhstan

Welcome back everyone in my blog. In fact, Welcome back to myself. This has been after 3.5 (three and half) years I decided to be back in this blog. I hope my information and materials in this blog will be helpful for visitors in Kazakhstan and others who are looking for many different materials on the web. A bit about myself:

I left Kazakhstan in March, 2019 and these days, I am in Nepal. I am bit distanced from teaching at the moment. But, if it may be that I will be back in Astana (Nur-sultan) around 2022 or 2023 AD. I was there in Nursultan, Kazakhstan in August-September, 2021 and things looked preety cool even post COVID-19 Pandemic. I am hoping to be regular in this forum to update this blog and provide, more and more information to all the readers.

*****

I had not updated this blog for a very long time but I think I need to be active again. This blog which has a lot of contents on IELTS Test is to help students and immigrants to enhance their English skills, to help make their skills better in English Language.

I am restarting this blog on a very auspicious day of Laxmi Puja, Tihar of 2078 BS. I hope Mother Laxmi will be blessing me to continue to write blog posts in addition to making me richer. :) It is also a time when we have almost surpassed the threats created by COVID-19 pandemic. With vaccines being rolled out in many people around the world, the world is opening, is trying to be normal, is trying to get back to business as usual. The borders are opening, and many countries have started, albeit slowly, to open their arms to welcome international students.

For any foreign (international) students, the popular destinations are Australia, Canada, America, and many European countries. I think people would answer me that they are keen to fly to the Australia or America if asked about their higher education. And, to be in all your dream destinations, IELTS Score is one of such important criteria.

I saw a recent Post from a popular educational consultancy, and they had informed that classes with in-person attendance is going to start soon. This advertisement was mainly directed to prospective IELTS Students.

My message to all prospective IELTS Candidates is that you need to have good skills in English to have a great score in IELTS Test. Of Course, you can attend courses run by various institutes. However, there are plenty of free resources and materials on the web. Our blog is one of them.

Important language points in IELTS Exam, in IELTS Test

There was a question at FUTURELEARN Forum, and the question was:

What have you identified as the most important language points you need to work on to help improve your IELTS score?

First of all, FutureLearn is a Forum which conducts/organises many free courses in English Language. I was attending a course on IELTS. For example, the course on IELTS which I am attending at the moment is: INSIDE IELTS CAMBRIDGE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT. You can get the more ideas about IELTS and this free course by visiting this link:

https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/cambridge-english-ielts/2/study-group

Now, let us talk about IELTS. IELTS is one of the toughest exams if you have not studied in English medium, or if you have not studied enough English. I have seen that many people in Kazakhstan and especially in Astana - the new capital of Kazakhstan - dream of "passing" IELTS though there is no such concepts as pass or fail in IELTS. What they mean is that they want to receive a good score in IELTS so that they can prove their English language skills, or apply to foreign Universities.

I am always ready to help you in case you need any help from me to crack IELTS examinations in Kazakhstan. I will be able to help you in reading, writing, listening and speaking part of IELTS. You can contact me through this blog to realise your dreams of getting good IELTS score. If you are based in Astana, Kazakhstan, we can meet face to face and talk about IELTS in Kazakhstan, and if you are located in other cities, you can learn via SKYPE.

******

What have you identified as the most important language points you need to work on to help improve your IELTS score?

I think it is difficult to pinpoint to only one language skill to get good scores in IELTS. Vocabulary is very important in reading, writing and speaking. If you know a lot of multi-syllable words, good collocations and compound words, you can read the text easily, quickly and can understand it without much efforts. It will enhance your confidence and helps to save a lot of time.

In writing and speaking, vocabulary plays a good role but I think examiners are not only looking for your word lists. You need to be able to exhibit multiple skills when it comes to writing and speaking exams. In writing, a good grammar is very important and use of complex grammar without mistakes is highly desirable. Similarly, coherence in expression of ideas, use of suitable collocation is extremely important.

When it comes to speaking, you need to speak like a native speaker. That means we need to use correct grammar, varieties of colloquial expressions, diverse words but not necessarily complex ones.

Now, in listening, ability to understand different accents and dialects of English is important and it comes only through practice. So, the students start from reading different texts on variety of topics.

IELTS ACADEMIC WRITING TASK - 1 (IELTS in ASTANA, KAZAKHSTAN)
IELTS Академическое письмо ЗАДАЧА - 1 (IELTS в Астане, Казахстан)

The table shows the percentage of journeys made by different forms of transport in four countries, The bar graph shows the results of a survey into car use.

Write at least 150 words.

Journeys made by USA UK France Netherlands
Car 90% 72% 68% 47%
Bicycle 1% 2% 2% 26%
Public transport 3% 12% 18% 8%
On foot 5% 11% 11% 18%
Other 1% 3% 1% 1%

Most cited reasons people travel to work by car (USA)

IELTS Writing task 1
 Model Answer:
The table gives the percentage of trips made by using different modes of transportation in four different nations namely in the USA, the UK, France and the Netherlands. The Bar Chart presents the reasons given by the commuters in the USA why they travel by car. Overall, it can be seen that car is the most used means of transport in all the four countries and most of the travelers in the USA have opined that they do not have any alternative means of transport than car.

From the table, it can be deciphered that majority of journeys (that is 90%) in the USA involved car whereas, the car was used in slightly less than half of the travels (that is for 47%) in the Netherlands. Therefore, it is obvious from the table that the least amount of journeys was made by car in the Netherlands than the journeys by car in other three countries.

In France, little more than two-thirds of journeys (that is 68%) involved car and in the UK, the figures show that car was used for making almost three-quarters of the travels.
Another glaring revelation that the table makes is that bicycle is quite popular in the Netherlands and stands at the second place in terms of its use. A little more than a quarter journeys (that is 26%) were made on bicycle in the Netherlands. In sharp contrast to the figures from the Netherlands, very insignificant amount of journeys were made which involved bicycle in other three countries.

As further can be seen from the table, the public transportation was the second preferred mode for traveling in the UK and in France. When it comes to the USA, more journeys were made on foot than by public transportation. Almost one-fifth journeys in the Netherlands were on foot whereas in the UK and in France, the figure was around one-tenth.

Coming to the analysis of bar chart, it can be seen that it provides reasons behind choosing car to travel in the USA. Little more than a third of people surveyed said that there is simply no other alternative. Slightly more than one-fifth of respondents thought that it was due to convenience in traveling. Marginally less than a third of population who answered the question responded that it is due to need of the job rather than the choice.

Here we have a sample question and a sample essay.

Question No. 1: Despite advances in medicine there are concerns that certain diseases such as diabetes are increasing and some people believe future generations will face greater problems with health and die younger than we do today. What is your opinion?

When it comes to the issue of health of future generations, I have a different opinion. My opinion is different because I think that the future generation is going to live a long and healthy life. This , I think, is going to be possible due to the fact that the scientific community has achieved huge success in the field of medicine and that will go a long way to augment the life of common men and women in a long run.

The fact that everyone needs to be accepted today is that the science of medicine has progressed dramatically over the last century. The progress in the field of medicine has brought a lot of positive consequences to our health, life and the standard of living. The invention of modern medicine has helped us to eradicate some of the deadly diseases from the world. Today, our infants are injected different doses of vaccines which help them to protect from serious diseases. This has led to overall health life of human beings. Now, there is no fear of a person getting paralyzed due to the diseases of early age. This is something the human beings should be proud of as they have achieved an unbelievable feat to secure the lives of human beings.

However, I am not unaware of many diseases which are getting discovered everyday by the scientific community. The new incidence of unheard illness is certainly the matter of great concern for inhabitants of this planet. Such incident sometimes raises a genuine question if our generation is indeed safer from the previous one. In response to such doubts, I have my own strong belief that time and again the humans have been tested with different problems and calamities. In all such situations, the humans have emerged as a victorious and have sometimes, even managed to snatch lives from the jaws of death. For example, we have been able to discover different medicine for AIDS, Cancer, diabetes etc. It is to be noted here that we have failed so far to create pills and tablets which can fully cure some of the diseases from the list of examples above but it should not go unnoticed that the medicine that we have today against AIDS, Cancer etc. have reduced the sufferings of human beings and have certainly, helped to increase the life of the patients. So, such discoveries and inventions reinforce my belief that the world of medicine is going to grow by leaps and bounds thereby, assisting us to live a great life ahead.

Before I conclude, I wish to place on record that there are people who have raised concerns of side effects of fast food. Though such concerns are not trifle in nature, the increase of competitive sports culture for example, city marathons, city bicycling etc. will help the people to be in shape and provides stamina to fight against the possible problems of overweight.

Finally, I would like to conclude my essay with a word of caution. The planet is no doubt, going to be a better place to live and the scientists are working towards it. However, every individual must be responsible to maintain his good health by being conscious towards his foods, drinks and exercises.

Question No. 2: Despite advances in medicine there are concerns that certain diseases such as diabetes are increasing and some people believe future generations will face greater problems with health and die younger than we do today. What is your opinion?

Paragraph# I:
It is true that the scientific community has achieved a great success in invention of modern medicine which has been quite effective to treat numerous diseases around the world. However, this has not guaranteed that all our medical problems have been solved. In fact, I believe that there are myriad of problems those lay ahead of us and they will have a key role in deciding the average life span of human beings.

Paragraph# II:
First of all, I believe that the people from the third world will live for more years in the future than they do today. This seems to be the plausible scenario on the light of the fact that many deadly diseases have been eradicated from the poor third world regions. In general, the living standards, and the condition of human lives are on the upward trajectory in those areas and that would positively translate into longer lives of the people residing there.

Paragraph# III:
In contrast to the developing nations, my apprehension when it comes to the developed world is that it may most likely, see slight drop in the life expectancy. I come to this conclusion on the basis that the lives of the westerners i.e., the lives of people in developed areas have become more mechanized and it has resulted in less physical exercises. The problems of stress at the work, the struggle to keep up with the fast paced society and in particular, the food consumption habit have contributed immensely to dent the prospect of longer lives in developed world.

Paragraph# IV:
Hence, in my conclusion, I would restate my opinion that the life expectancy rate in the developed world and in the developing world is likely to move in the opposite directions. That’s why I would expect that people will manage to live few more years in the developing world than they do today and in the developed world, we may just see the reversal of it.
